There are several things to consider before you dive into a custom design and/or construction project. Once you have these questions answered you're in a good place to begin the first phase of design.
Have you assessed site prep costs for your particular lot?
Is your lender relationship established?
Do you have a pre-approval in place?
What is your construction budget?
How will landscaping and hardscaping affect your budget?
What is your contingency fund?
Are you and your partner aligned on the style and scope of the build?
Do you have realistic expectations regarding cost to build in your area?
Have you considered how your long term plans factor into your home's design?
Are you clear on the non-negotiables for the home's interior and exterior?
Not having answers to these type questions can create stumbling blocks and blind spots during your design process. However, if you slow down to get these topics discussed in a meaningful way, you'll be off to a great start as you begin the planning phase for your new home.
